My First Raglan Crochet Cardigan, the Wonderland Cardigan

by | All Designs, Crochet, Free Patterns, Garments, Winter

This basic cardigan is made with a fast moving half double crochet stitch and CYC level 5 chunky yarn, which means you can finish this garment fast enough to not lose interest in it! How’s that for motivation? You’ll love watching your first raglan crochet cardigan come to life in just a few short days!

this cardigan is easy to wear and goes with anything

Ever since I made my first garment, I’ve kept my eye on this whole raglan fiasco. RAGLAN. The entire concept seemed so foreign to me. How does one make a sweater that isn’t a rectangle? It was all just a big black box, like this big mystery that I didn’t know how to crack. Last year, I designed and knit my first raglan pullover using an amazing tutorial from The Fringe Association. To be honest, I didn’t fully understand why I did the math I did; I just followed the instructions. But like a lightbulb on a dimmer, I’ve grown enough this past year to turn that half-baked understanding into my first raglan crochet cardigan.

Chunky, warm and cozy Wonderland Cardigan

Inspiration

The push behind making this garment was the Rhinebeck Sheep and Wool Festival. I was meeting some yarn friends and they were all going to wear handmade knits. I should have thought to wear my Quartz Pullover, but no, the crazy person in me decided to make something new to wear in 2 weeks time. In my mind, I want to make what I want to wear. And in this case, I wanted something basic, easy and quick to make, and goes with everything. I wanted something I could just throw on over my pjs, but could also work when I’d actually have to go out and socialize with real people.

I modeled this cardigan after one of my mom’s vintage mohair cardigans. The end result is really nothing like the inspiration, except that it’s a cardigan and it’s somewhat short, and not even really that. But having the inspiration there kept me going in the right direction. Even if I was a few feet off the track, at least I was following a path.

Raglan Construction

The Wonderland Cardigan hits just below the waist, and is comfortably loose in the body while not getting overly bulky. It is worked in rows from the top down, with 4 raglan seams spaced at the front and back of each arm. Once you’ve worked down to the underarm, you’ll split the body from the sleeves by making chain stitches for the underarm, skipping the sleeve stitches, and then joining back to the body. Work half double crochet stitches to the next sleeve, make chain stitches for the other underarm, skip the sleeve stitches, then join to the body and finish the row. Work the remainder of the body in half double crochet stitches, and the bottom cuff edging in rows of slip stitches for a clean, sleek look.

shoulders use simple raglan shaping

Once the body is complete, go back to the sleeve, join yarn at the center of the underarm and work rows around the sleeve opening. To maintain the same stitch look as the body, you’ll work the sleeve in rows without joining. When the sleeve is complete down to the cuff edging, you can seam all the way up from the wrist to the underarm.

At the end, work the same slip stitch rows around the entire collar to finish it off.

clean lines with slightly textured borders on the cardigan

Remember to check your gauge or try it on as you go!

Purchase Options

The free pattern below gives all the written instructions to make the Wonderland Cardigan in sizes XS to 2XL. I use a chart format to help break down each section of the cardigan – front, back, sleeve, and raglan sleeves – and each section is separate by a | (pipe). These instructions are much easier to read in a table format though, which you can get when you upgrade to the downloadable PDF. The written pattern for each size is formatted in tables for clarity and includes a drawn schematic for finished dimensions. This printable PDF is available at my pattern shops through the links below. You can also purchase the entire Wonderland Cardigan kit, including yarn and a printed pattern, from Lion Brand Yarn.

This pattern might look complicated, but once you’ve worked a few rows, you’ll see how intuitive it is. Pair that with the chunky yarn, and you’ll be well on your way to a beautiful handmade garment! I hope you feel inspired to make this and wear it proudly, whether it’s over pajamas or to the office!

This looks like a great project! Thank you for creating and sharing it!
One question: what does “Inc” mean?

  6. Max's Mama

Inc means increase. Since I don’t see any particular numbers, I’m assuming it means increase 1 stitch each time you see that (To increase you would make 2 stitches rather than the normal 1 in that particular stitch) Sometimes you will see it written such as — make 2 hdcs in next stitch–that is an increase. I hope I made sense.

  7. Jen

Yes, that does make sense! Thank you for helping me with this!

I cannot find in the instructions how much yarn is needed to make the cardigan. I plan to make the XL or XXL. Does anyone know how many skeins or yarn it will take?

  9. Dell

I would love to make this in the XS size, but the charts seem to start with size S. is there an XS chart?

  10. ChiWei

I just added it. Thanks for letting me know!

  11. ChiWei

Oops, I added that in just now. Thanks!

Can’t wait to get started! Thanks!

Hi! Thank you for posting the pattern.
May I please ask a favor of you?
I have been working on the cardigan and now I am stuck in the sleeve. I am making a small size one and I have more than 35 sts for the sleeve…. Don’t know why.. The second problem I am facing is the dec row.
Would you please explain to me how to do the sleeve again?
    “Repeat Dec row every 5 (5, 4, 4, 3, 3) rows, 4 (1, 3, 1, 6, 4) more time(s), then repeat Dec row every 0 (4, 3, 3, 2, 2) rows, 0 (4, 3, 6, 2, 5) times — 22 (23, 24, 25, 26, 27) hdc remain. Work even until 32 Sleeve rows have been worked and/or piece measures approximately 16” from separation.”
I do not have proper numbers of sts left and l am lost with the instruction.
    Thank you!

Well, Chi Wei, you clever young woman – you are now ensconced in my ancient brain as my very favourite designer. I can’t think of a single one of your patterns that’s caused my lip to curl or my brow to furl. [grin]
What I appreciate most is that all your apparel designs are practical as well as attractive; and that’s no mean feat !
I can only say GOODONYERMATE ! as I thank you – oh, except that I should very much like to know if your recent turning to super bulky yarn has a story behind it …?
