Sonoma Circle Bag Crochet Pattern

by | Accessories, All Designs, Crochet, Free Patterns

Here’s an easy, breezy, Sonoma Circle Bag to carry all your fun summer essentials as you head to bbqs, the park, or just strolling in your local village. I’m excited to share this bag with you because I’ve been using it since I finished it. It’s just the thing I’m looking for something stylish for casual summer outings. Plus, it’s a big bag, so I can throw in a sun hat or extra clothes for the kids too!

For this project, I used Lion Brand Rewind yarn. This yarn is definitely a little something different – soft, stretchy, and sturdy, but still holds its shape really well. It feels almost a bit like a really soft handmade paper, but it won’t rip! The line comes in soft, modern colors, which makes it perfect for a bag to match every outfit.

The construction of this bag is pretty simple. It’s two large circles and a strip for the bottom, all sewn together – that’s it! I do admit the circles are really hexagons, so there are times when it looks more hexagon that round, but now’s not the time to be discussing geometry, is it? I guess I just got carried away when going round and round making the circle that I forgot to break the hexagon into smaller pieces to create the circle, lol.

Since I was inspired by straw/raffia circle bags, I decided to work the bottom of the bag using front post and back post double crochet stitches. I find that this gives it a sort of rough, woven look while making the bottom super sturdy. There are holes, because it’s still crochet worked with a fairly large hole, but it’s not so loosey-goosey that you’ll lose things through the bottom.

I chose to add leather straps that I bought on Etsy because I was afraid that crocheted straps might stretch out too easily. I love the look of the leather contrasting with the crochet; I think it makes the bag look more polished, don’t you? I chose fairly short handles, but long shoulder straps* could be fun too.

If you’re a fan of bags like I am, you may want to take a look another summer bag I released recently, the Weekend Wanderer Mesh Bento Bag. Then you’ll have a crochet bag for the beach, and this Sonoma Circle Bag for your adventures around town!

BAG BOTTOM:

Row 1: Ch 13. Starting from the 4th ch from hook (chains count as stitch), work 1 dc in each ch across. Turn. (11)

Row 66: Ch 3 (counts as st). Work 1 fpdc in next st, and 1 fpdc in each st across, including the ch 3 from the previous row. Turn. (11)

Fasten off, and weave in ends.

ASSEMBLY:

  • Hold a circle base and bag bottom together, right sides facing out, and the circle base facing you. Since the circle base is more of a hexagon, line up one end of the bag bottom about halfway through one ‘side’ of the hexagon.
  • Attach yarn with a standing sc. Inserting hook through both the circle base and the bag bottom, work 1 sc in each circle st, evenly around – Crochet the base and the bottom together using single crochet. You should end at about halfway through one ‘side’ of a hexagon on the other side of the bag.

crocheting together the circle base and bottom.

  • Repeat with the other circle base.
  • Sew the leather purse handles symmetrically at the top of the bag.
    • If you are using the purse handles from my link, with 5 holes (4 corners and 1 in the center), follow these directions to sew a square with an X. With the handle and outside of the bag facing you, work the needle:
    • back to front through bottom right hole
    • front to back through top right hole
    • back to front through top left hole
    • front to back through top right hole
    • back to front through top left hole
    • front to back through bottom left hole
    • back to front through bottom right hole
    • front to back through bottom left hole
    • back to front through middle hole
    • front to back through top left hole
    • back to front through middle hole
    • front to back through top right hole
    • back to front through middle hole
    • front to back through bottom right hole
    • back to front through middle hole
    • front to back through bottom left hole
    • Tie the beginning and ending tails together to secure, and weave in ends.

  6. ChiWei

  7. Ana

What is the name of the color you used?

  8. ChiWei

    I used Greige.

  9. Winnie

Hi my94 yr old mum needs to know what the X means in rows 8-31 please.

  10. ChiWei

The ‘x’ is a placeholder for the number of sc in each row as it increases every row – Row 6: …[4 sc, inc]…, Row 7: …[5 sc, inc]…, so Row 8: …[x sc, inc]… and the x in row 8 is 6, in Row 9 it will be 7, and so on.
