Crochet Purple Princess Dress

It’s been a long time since I made a project following another pattern. Heck, it’s been a long time since I’ve designed my own and made anything but my Zoodiacs squares! When I saw this adorable crochet toddler dress pattern from The Lavender Chair pop up on my Facebook feed, I knew this was the one project that was going to get me into making wearables. Yeah, I’ve made hats and handwarmers, but I’ve never made a sweater or a dress or pants. My little girl is getting bigger; if I don’t make something for her now, then when? And since she loves purple, this is her newest purple princess dress.

I followed Dorianna’s pattern exactly and it worked out great! Just remember to be very very precise. There were times when I wished more images were available, but those moments were rare and the written pattern was plenty ‘nuf for me to make the dress. I’m pretty terrible at following recipes and instructions in general, so I had to really force myself to read every word and to make every stitch as indicated. When the pattern says to slip stitch into the first SC of the round, and the round started with 2 slip stitches, you really do need to bypass those first two stitches and slip stitch into the first SC of the round. I used a stitch marker to keep track of where I need to join the round, since this is the first time I’ve not joined into the first stitch, period. Admittedly, I frogged a couple of rows before admitting that yes, I do need to follow the directions explicitly.

For this project, I used Loops and Threads Impeccable yarn in Lavender, and an I sized Clover Amour hook*. The ribbon around the torso was something I picked up on a random trip to the craft store, mostly because it was just soooo pretty, and it’s rare to find a twill cotton ribbon with such gorgeous detail!

Since I’d never made a dress before, I was wondering where all the stitches were going to end up, and it was amazing to me to see the shape come together. Call me a newbie, but learning something new is always amazing. Now I’m all inspired to make my own little girls dresses – I’ve even drawn out a few already! Follow me on Facebook or Instagram to get sneak peeks of my upcoming creations, like this behind-the-scenes photo of M from the weekend photoshoot.

I put that pattern on my To-Do list, but after looking at your wonderful dress, it has moved up several notches! Your daughter is a natural model.

I love this! Could you tell me how much yarn you used?

  6. ChiWei

I used 2 skeins of Michaels Impeccable Solids, which is 268 yds each. I didn’t use all of the second skein, so I would estimate about 400 yds total.
