Amigurumi Pomegranate Crochet Pattern

I’m starting to lose track of which day we’re on! Today’s Amigurumi Advent Calendar pattern is a crochet pomegranate! Just like the persimmon, this round fruit makes it great to adapt to amigurumi. Make a ball. Add eyes and a few distinguishing details, and voila!

The shape of the pomegranate is fantastically round, with almost a slight elongation at the top. It’s not life size, as pomegranates can be fairly large and hefty, but I think the crown on top helps identify it as this fun winter fruit. For the Amigurumi Advent Calendar, I did try to pick things that were holiday or winter related, if not all Christmas themed. I associate pomegranates with winter, and the gorgeous color of its seeds are so pretty in a winter salad, if a little hard on the teeth!

The difficult part of this amigurumi is the crown. It is crocheted separately, and in rows, not rounds. The tips of the crown are made using small picot stitches where you work into the side a double crochet stitch. Once the crown is completed, it’s joined into a round and then attached to the top of the pomegranate. You’ll need both your beginning and end tails for the sewing, so be careful to leave enough of a tail on both ends.

This amigurumi pomegranate pattern is very similar to the amigurumi persimmon. If you have any trouble at all, especially with the picot stitch in the crown, I highly recommend you watch the Persimmon video tutorial to help you out.

Supplies

• Paintbox Cotton Aran Red Wine (~0.42 oz) or other red
• F/3.75mm crochet hook
• Cluster fiberfill
• 6mm safety eyes
• scissors
• embroidery thread or lightweight yarn in Black

Abbreviations

• st(s) – stitch(es)
• sl st  – slip stitch
• ch – chain stitch
• sc – single crochet
• inc – increase: work 2 sc in same st
• dec – decrease: work 2 sc together

Pattern Notes

• Rounds in the pomegranate are worked continuously with no seams.
• Crown is worked in rows and then joined
• Eyes are placed approximately 1.0-1.25 inches apart.
• Amigurumi can be closed using this technique.

Amigurumi Pomegranate Instructions

BODY

• Worked in continuous rounds.

Round 1: Work 6 sc into a magic circle. (6)

Round 2: Work 2 sc into each st around. (12)

Round 3: Work [1 sc, inc] 6x around. (18)

Round 4: Work [2 sc, inc] 6x around. (24)

Round 5: Work [3 sc, inc] 6x around. (30)

Round 6:  Work [4 sc, inc] 6x around. (36)

Round 7-10: Work 1 sc in each st around. (36)

Round 11: Work [4 sc, dec] 6x around. (30)

Round 12: Work 1 sc in each st around. (30)

Round 13: Work [3 sc, dec] 6x around. (24)

• Add eyes between Rounds 7 and 8.
• Sew mouth between Rounds 6 and 7, centered between the eyes.

Round 14: Work [2 sc, dec] 6x around. (18)

• Stuff the amigurumi.

Round 15: Work [4 sc, dec] 3x around. (15)

Round 16: Work [3 sc, dec] 3x around. (12)

Round 14: Work 6 dec. (6)

• Fasten off, close, and weave in ends.

 

CROWN

Row 1: Ch 11.

Row 2: Start with a long tail. Starting from the 2nd ch from hook, work 1 sc in each of st across. Turn. (10)

Row 3: Ch 1. *Work [1 dc, ch 4, sl st into front loop of dc and side of dc to form a picot, 1 dc] in next st. Sl st in next st.* Repeat from * 4 more times.

• Fasten off with a long tail.
• Use beginning tail to join the crown together with a mattress stitch.
• Use end tail to attach the crown to the top of the pomegranate.
