Fair Isle Snowflake Christmas Ornament

by | All Designs, Crochet, Free Patterns, Home, Winter

A few years ago, I made a collection of holiday gift tags. This year, I’m sharing a collection of holiday ornaments. First up is my Fair Isle Snowflake Christmas ornament!

Of course, when I think of fair isle, I automatically think of the signature snowflake, which inspired this first ornament. I found it soothing to draw this out on graph paper and see the shapes take place. Since I wasn’t sure how the crochet itself would look, I added some extra space between the ‘petals’ of the snowflake and found out later that the extra space wasn’t needed. So, there might be an updated snowflake coming soon!

Drawing graphs was fairly easy, but the headache kicked in when I realized I had to curve the design into a ball, and had to fit the stitches into a multiple of 6. Yes, I know it doesn’t HAVE to be a multiple of 6 or 8, but I figured a non-multiple round would just make the math harder than it already was. Here’s a picture of my notes and how I incorporated the right number of increases and decreases into the pattern. Basically, there’s 9 rounds of 72 stitches, but since my design is larger than 9 rounds, I had to work increases and decreases into the pattern without making them overly noticeable. Instead of trying to imagine the pattern, I just brute-force drew it all out.

For this project, I used Lion Brand’s LB Collection Superwash Merino in Cherry and Ivory. I had previously used this yarn for my Granny Square shirt, and found it a joy to work with. The colors are rich and vibrant and it’s super soft. I especially liked that this is a lightweight yarn, and can provide a lot of detail in a small space, which is exactly what I needed. I think any thicker yarn would have been too chunky, and the beauty of this ornament is in the delicacy of the pattern.

Because there’s a very tight pattern to this ornament, I chose to crochet with seams and not crochet in a spiral. I highly recommend the No-cut method of joining my rounds, as that kept my seam in straight line, instead of it spiraling around. By using the No-cut method, I was also able to switch colors at the chain stitch of the join without any glaring jog in the pattern. I also carried my yarn along, but did not work it into the stitches, instead just leaving it loose in the back.

For stuffing, I tried my usual Polyfill stuffing, but it clumped when I tried to overstuff it. I ended up buying a loose cluster fiberfill from Joann that worked wonderfully. Call me silly, but I stuffed my ornament using a large funnel so that all the loose fill went straight into the ornament and not scattered all over my lap. The ornament required way more stuffing than I expected in order to really fill out that round shape, and you need the full roundness in order to appreciate the pattern!

I can’t wait to share the other ornaments in my collection – they’re all going to be classic designs, I hope!

Pattern Notes

  • When changing colors, pull up the new color as the last step of the previous stitch.
  • The notation below is written in a bit of a shorthand. So, “work 6 sc in red” means to work 1 sc in each of the next 6 stitches in red, etc.
  • I find it easier to use Planet June’s No-cut method to join my rounds in this project. You can see it in this invisible stripes post, where I switch colors at the chain stitch.
  • Extra yarn is carried throughout the project, but left loose in the back and not worked into the stitches themselves.

This is awesome! I’m going to try and make one today 🙂

Hello, just tried out your pattern for this, its very lovely. I am not sure if it was me or the pattern, but Round 25 seems to be missing 3 a section of 2 white single crochet before going into the 7 red sc. I added it in and it seemed to work up fine for me. Thanks so much, I always enjoy your patterns.

Thanks for pointing it out! I’ve made the fix.

    Thank you so much!

It would be ever so helpful if you’d show the chart
    Thanks Anna

Does this purchased pattern come with a chart?

  7. ChiWei

I did not provide a chart for this pattern, as it gets really confusing with the different increases and decreases. I drew it out for myself and couldn’t figure out when to follow the chart, so it was easier to write it all out as text.
