CAL: Pick a Project

by | Crochet

Welcome to my very first Crochet-Along!  I hope you’re all excited to join me in learning about crochet and completing a project of your own.  Don’t know how to crochet?  Not a problem!  I’ll be posting several tutorials on basic stitches, and a few of my friends are here to help me answer any questions you may have along the way.  It all seems very confusing at first, but with a little time and a little practice, and a little help from your friends, you’ll be showing off your first (or second, or umpteenth) crochet project in no time!

Here’s the basic schedule for the CAL (crochet along, because I don’t want to have to write it out every. single. time.).  These dates may change slightly, since we’ll all be figuring things out as we go.  First attempt at  a CAL, you know?

Monday, 2/4: Vote for the pattern you want to work on.  Voting ends Thursday at 12 noon EST.

Friday, 2/8: Define the project, get pumped, get ready to go shopping for materials!

Monday, 2/11:  Learn the chain stitch, single crochet, half double, double crochet

Wednesday, 2/13:  Learn the slip stitch.  How to increase and decrease

Friday, 2/15:  Guest post to help answer questions

Monday, 2/18:  How to read the pattern.

Wednesday, 2/20:  If you haven’t started already, start working!

Friday, 2/22:  Guest post to help answer questions

Monday: 2/25:  Check in on progress.

Wednesday, 2/27:  How to finish, bind off, weave in.

Friday, 3/1:  Guest post to help answer questions

Monday, 3/4:  Check in on progress – Should be finishing up!

Thursday, 3/7:  Link up your projects!

Monday, 3/11:  Link Submissions close, Voting begins.

Thursday, 3/14:  Voting ends.

Friday, 3/15:  Winners are announced!

I know it looks like a huge ordeal, and it sounds scary to commit weeks of your life to this, but as with anything, there’s practice involved before starting a project.  I don’t want to admit how many projects I’ve torn apart and started over because I didn’t try out a pattern on cheap yarn first.  Sigh.  And if everyone moves right along, we’ll adjust the schedule to match!

And you might have noticed, there’s voting involved!  That’s because I’ve got some awesome friends and sponsors that will be giving away 3 prizes to the 3 best projects!  Define “best”… .  Two winners will be chosen by the readers, and 1 winner will be a Judges favorite.  I’ll be introducing the judges and sponsors shortly.  So, lots to learn, and lots to look forward to!  I hope you’ll join me!

First things first.  Let’s learn about the projects and pick one to complete together!  Each person gets 2 votes, and the project with the most votes by Thursday at noon EST will be our CAL project.

Take a look at your choices and vote on your favorite!

There are no requirements in order to participate.  You don’t have to follow or like or whatever, although it’s a good way to make sure you don’t miss anything.  You can find me all over social media these days…

And please tell your friends to come and join us!  I’d really appreciate it if you grabbed the CAL button from the sidebar and shared it.  Having more people work and interact together means we all learn more!

Woohoo! I was so glad to see we get 2 votes, because I definitely liked more than just 1 of those projects 🙂 This is going to be fun, I’m excited!

  2. Adrianne at Happy Hour Projects

I really hope I have time for this because I really want to learn crochet!! Looking forward to giving it a try – thanks SO much for organizing, ChiWei!!

  3. Oona Linnett

I can’t see how to vote? Every time I click ‘vote’ it just takes me back to the same page again, telling me I have 2 more votes.

  4. Chiwei @ One Dog Woof

I’m not sure why that is happening. When you vote, the page reloads, but it should say at the bottom that you have 1 or no votes left. If you can’t get it to work, let me know here in the comments or by email (1dogwoof at gmail dot com) which ones you’d like and I’ll make sure it counts!

  5. Nikki Barnett

Won’t let me cast my second vote, either. 🙁 So, mine would be the sparkle shawl! 🙂 Thanks! This should be fun!

  6. Oona Linnett

Thank you! Can I have 2 votes for the sparkle shawl please?

  7. Melissa

It won’t let me do my second vote either, so put me down for the double strand infinity cowl. 🙂

  8. betsy

I’m in! Fun! I voted for my favorite two, but I’d be happy making any of them. 🙂

  9. Hugbuggal

Love this – thanks for hosting! 😀

  10. Kerry

This will be fun! I’m a crochet newbie and look forward to this. So far the hardest thing has been deciding which projects to vote for! Can’t wait to see which project won.

  11. Jessica Pelasky

From Creative Bloggers…I’ve ALWAYS wanted to learn how! I will be back, definitely! 🙂

  12. Anabelle Andes

I voted for flower coaster & reusable bag, but when I vote for the reusable bag, it says my vote is already register, did I vote twice? or only one?

  13. Chiwei @ One Dog Woof

Anabelle, if the page reloaded and won’t allow another vote, I’m going to guess you voted twice. This is the first time I’m using this system, so I don’t understand all the little quirks that might happen. I’ll add a vote for you for the bag though, just in case 🙂

  14. Miss Mustache

Thank you for this opportunity to brush up on my crocheting, I have crocheted quite a bit lately but only using just 3-4 steps nothing too complicated. Looking forward to this!!

  22. mandicraft

I’m not new to crochet but love the idea of a Crochet along. It takes away the hassle of deciding what to crochet next, plus if I do get confused I’ll have you all to help me x

  23. luvcrochet

Made my choices. I’m new to crocheting (about 4 months). I caught on pretty quickly after I got used to holding the hook & yarn. That was the hardest part for me. I’m looking forward to learning new things.

  24. Janice Rogers

I’m making those Easter eggs!!! They’re adorable!

  28. TWG

I made the reusable gift bag a few years ago and really liked the way it turned out but it wasn’t appreciated by the young lady I gave it to. A lot of people just don’t appreciate handmade items.

  29. Chiwei @ One Dog Woof

I’m so sorry! But homemade and handmade are making a comeback!

  30. Chiwei @ One Dog Woof

If you’d like, you can send me your email and I can try to add you manually. I use Feedburner and there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with the system right now. Thank you for subscribing!

  34. Gen @ Color Me Domestic

This comes right on time! I WAS gonna start that infinity scarf/cowl sometime soon, and I WAS planning on making a shawl (been pinning lots of patterns), and then I was SUPPOSE to start making those coasters, so I guess I’ll just put them off a tiny bit more (not that I started or anything). And I’ll be able to shop for some yarn this weekend, so it’s a good thing the projects will be announced Friday! Yay!

  35. emiske

I would like another vote for the sparkle shawl please. It only let me vote once.

  36. 4 You With Love

I just learned to crochet recently and I am really enjoying it. This project sounds like a lot of fun! I can’t wait to start!

  38. Nicole Hiemenz

May I have one vote for the cowl scarf and one for the easter egg amigurumi? My computer is being rather derp.

  39. rocketmom1985@gmail.com

I am trying to teach myself to crochet, and even with the wonderful youtube tutorial videos, I am having difficulties! I cannot seem to find the right “space” to do the next stitches in! I am an knitter, and the stitches are very easy to follow, but I am finding that this is not so with crochet. Tell me I don’t feel stupid, LOL! I am also having problems with the wording in patterns…they must assume everyone is a experienced crocheter! And I am referring to “beginner” patterns also! I am wearing out my yarn by frogging so much. You are a life saver for me, and I am thrilled to be able to join this CAL. I voted and are looking forward to beginning this.

Just learnt and started crocheting recently … to make some unique patterns for my daughter. … looking forward for the project

  41. Oona Linnett

    Which project won?

  42. Rhondda Mol

I’m super excited that I have finally found a CAL that I can do without incurring any extra expenses for yarn, or a hook, or a pattern! I hope it isn’t too late to join in! I know I missed the voting but I hope it is ok if I ‘play’ along!

  43. Paula Castro

Hi, Can I join in now? I know it’s a little bit late but I know I can do it until the 11th March. I’m waiting for your reply 🙂

  44. Chiwei @ One Dog Woof

Hi Paula, of course you can join in! The link party will be up for almost a week so just add your cowl in any time!

  45. Paula Castro
